Madeira is one of world’s fortified treasures hailing from the Portuguese island from where it takes its name. These wines range from dry to sweet, and this one is certainly sweet. However at 130 grams of sugar/litre it is on the slightly drier side when compared to some. The Alvada is a blend of Malmsey (which tends to be richer) and Bual which adds complexity and dimension with its lighter touch.
Just the caramel colour in the glass is evocative of the aromas and flavours that fills the senses with this wine. Spiced honey, dried fruit, toffee and nuts – rich, silky and sweet. A great match with rich desserts as it retains its fresh acid, whether it is a rich Christmas treat or a sticky date pudding or just a cheese platter.
