Two laid back, good drinking reds from Hardys

hardys-tintara-hs-shirazHardys have just released two new dry grown vineyard McLaren Vale reds under the Tintara Horseshoe Row label.

Hardys Tintara Horseshoe Row Shiraz 2013 ($18) – The shiraz has plenty of regional personality on show from the rich raspberry jam, black cherry, liquorice, violets and pepper to the creamy cinnamon oak. Fuller bodied, smooth tannins with just enough peppery fruit length to be able to enjoy this wine without food as well. Good drinking for red lovers looking for value.

Wine of the Month: Watershed Premium Shades Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2013

ws_ShadesSBS

For a wine that can be found for less than $15, this is superb drinking. It takes the best of Australian sauvignon blanc, which is usually less pungent, less puckering than its friend across the Tasman and blends it with the angularity of semillon. It is a formula that does as well in Margaret River as it does in Bordeaux.

I have found that Watershed often put a whole lot of love into their Shades Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and in this vintage, this love is very evident.

The passionfruit ripeness that you come to expect from sauvignon blanc is lightened with a fresh flush of semillon’s citrus and grassiness.  It has a lightly silky texture on the palate however there is a leanness still to the soft fruit and fuller body. The wine finishes with a dry and spicy finish.

This is a remarkable wine that I would be buying more than one bottle of.
