The Hoopes family produce a few different Cabernet Sauvignons, and this Oakville Cabernet is the one the family consider their flagship. The Oakville vineyard was planted nearly 40 years ago and sits across four different soil types. This includes an unusual section with volcanic soil. The age of these vines are significant as they predate the Phylloxera outbreak in the 1990s. This infestation destroyed many old vineyards throughout the Napa Valley.
It is the warm spice and herb mix that keep evolving in the glass that make this wine resonate on the senses. Indeed, the creamy caramel, cocoa and toasted coconut are a rich backdrop for the ripe cassis, berries and dried herb complexity. This expressive red has a richness that has come from over twenty months maturing in oak. 55% of the barrels being used previously.
Despite its plush generosity, there is an elegance to the Hoopes Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. It is good drinking now. However, if you have the patience, it will be a good wine to enjoy well into the future.
