Musella, owned by the Pasqua Di Bisceglie family, are doing their bit to let the classic wines of Valpolicella tell their stories on their own terms around the world. When done well, the red wines of this region are exquisite. This Riserva is a blend of Corvina and Corvinone, Rondinella and a 10% inclusion of the darker, structural Oseleta. Amarone is a specialty of the region, where the grapes are semi-dried (Appassimento) losing a third of their water content. These grapes then have a higher concentration of sugars producing a higher alcohol, dry red wine.
At 16% alcohol, with 7.2 grams of sugar, this lush, plush and evenly textured wine is a smooth mouthful with enough fruit density to balance the scales. It delivers a rich fruit and nut chocolate treat with the added bonus of extra raisins, and warmed up with some vanilla and cinnamon. Its warmth and its succulent tannins sit like velvet over a muscular frame. A big wine, but still elegant.
