  • Not only is this an unusual English wine but it was made in an unusual winery. One on the banks of the River Thames in the shadow of the Battersea Power Station by Aussie winemaker Gavin Monery. And I was lucky enough to spend an hour with Gavin and I have just released a two part series on WinemusingTV. Link in bio. .
.

This Vagabond Wines Pet Not is just one of the wines made in the winery.
There is nothing new about the method for making Pétillant naturale wines, or ‘pét-nats’. It is an ancient method of making sparkling wine (ancestral method). Here the fermenting wine is bottled and is not disgorged. The dead yeast cells remain in the bottle which means that it is often cloudy in the glass. .
.
The Pet Not is a pinot noir based fizz that has been made in a slightly tweaked version of the ancient method. Well a combination of both traditional and ancient methods -hence the name. Pet Not. .
.
The main difference is that there is less yeast left in the bottle. Therefore, it has a clearer sparkle, although it is certainly not crystalline. .
.
The aromatics have a mineral flintiness to its rich berry apple fruitiness. It has a crisp, yet glossy texture making it a finish to savour and share.
.
.
I have just released a two part interview with Gavin Monery from Vagabond on WinemusingTV YouTube channel. .
.
Are you a pet nat lover? And what about that fox?

  • It’s Friday!... I started a little early this week at the @RiojaWineUK 10x10 tasting. Always a great tasting, but this new venue offered bonus views. .

What has been your most memorable tasting view?

And what is your favourite Rioja wine?

  • A tasty Spanish red that is just right for #winewednesday! Brisa de Verano Garnacha Tinta is an easy wine to enjoy a second glass of.
.
.
A ripe red that offers up blackberry and cherry fruit. It is bright and full on flavour and rich fruit character is freshened up with a good handful of sage. A dollop of syrah adds that blackberry fruit along with some purple highlights and roundness. .
.
Particularly a good one if you are after a mid week quaffer. Cheers to the hump of the week! .

  • The Eden Valley is the home of the Henschke family, who is one of Australia’s First Families of Wine. They have been making wine here since the 1860’s. The family is also one of the earlier Australian adopters of biodynamic wine making.
.
.
The Henschke Julius Riesling has intense lemon, lime zest aromas have a riverstone backbone. A fragrant floral note softens the precision along the fuller bodied palate. It blossoms into a mineral edged, lime juice and jasmine finish. This wine is a keeper. .
.
You can enjoy the fresh vibrance now, or you can cellar it. If you can’t wait and open it now, it has the intensity to cope with flavourful dishes. However, it certainly does not need anything to make it shine as it is a very elegant and complete wine in itself. .

  • It is always good to visit with old friends- Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz is one of those wines that keeps on giving. While the other brands in the family stable play around with quality and creating wines that are ‘on point’, Penfolds ensure wines like this still deliver quality for the value. And this wine is often one that people tell me started their enjoyment of Australian shiraz. .
.
Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz has all the hallmarks of ripe shiraz. Including a bouquet of peppery, liquorice sweet combo of blackberry and raspberry fruit. It is full bodied with fleshy soft tannins and finishes with juicy cranberry and blackberry flavours that last long enough to make it good drinking and good with a casual meal - with old friends or new.
.
.
How often do you revisit old wine friends?

  • It’s Friday!! Who is with me to get out and have a wine down drink in the garden? Be it yours, a pub or a friend’s.... there is something that immediately sets the mind at rest and the spirit soaring isn’t there?

These are pics from a recent trip to the beautiful English village of Lavenham. A living postcard. .

  • I had the privilege to spend a morning with @champagnecolettebonnet over the weekend in order to learn a little about the Cote des Bar region of Champagne and organic champagnes. .
.
And on Friday night I got to enjoy a bottle of her Pinot Noir 2014 with her. There is nothing better than appreciating a wine with its passionate creator. .
.
If you swipe right you will see her current vintage in its final ripening stages (pic taken Saturday and to be picked sometime in next weeks). .
.
In tasting the Champagne Colette Bonnet Pinot Noir 2014 nearly 12 months since I last tasted it, I was pleased that it shone as brightly then as it does now. .
.
In keeping with Colette’s philosophy of letting the fruit ripeness speak for itself with a low dosage, this Champagne sits at Extra Brut. There is little to distract from the quality of the fruit and the winemaking. This is a ripe and lush blanc de noirs where the berry and orange citrus fruit is wrapped with lightly toasted almond and brioche richness and a mineral smokiness.
.
.
On the palate those citrus aromas take on orange peel brightness highlighting the minerally backbone. A backbone that keeps that fruit weight taut in the mouth. The whole combination is decidedly more-ish. .
.
Link in bio to full review. However, coming soon will be a video interview with Colette describing her family’s and her own wine journey, organic champagne and this region she is so passionate about. .
