Finding wines from Croatia is pretty tricky at this time. While there is plenty of quality wine to choose from while you are in country, it is hard to find outside of the domestic market. It is well worth going to seek them out where you can. This Merlot from the Vizzulin family comes from vineyards near Drnis, in close proximity to the tourist destination of Split. It is this southern region of Dalmacija is known to produce powerful red wines. The warm vineyards sourced for this wine are cooled by winds to lengthen the ripening period and develop the complexity in the fruit.
Made with a portion of the wine matured in steel to maintain its freshness, and a portion in Croatian oak from Slavonija for complexity and roundness, this is fruity red made to enjoy now. The typical Merlot jammy plum and red cherry fruit is joined by a savoury olive and sage edge. Then the sandalwood and nutmeg comes through. It is a rounded, fuller bodied wine with some warmth along the palate that works well with food. Even though it is approachable now, I would like to see this wine with a little more age to mellow and pull together some more.
