Chateau Dereszla Tokaji Vintage Brut

Who makes it?

Chateau Dereszla Tokaji Vintage Brut is just one of the Furmint specialities in this producer’s portfolio. The estate dates back to at least the 18th Century. This original winery has a historic underground cellar that is one kilometre long.  The Hungarian word for sparkling wine is Pezsgő (pezzgoo). Hungary has a long history of producing sparkling wine although this has been mostly enjoyed domestically in recent decades.

Chateau Dereszla produces sweet and dry and sparkling versions of Furmint. Obviously, they produce the sublime sweet wines that winelovers know the Tokaji region for so well. Look for their 5 or 6 puttonya level Tokaji. As well as that nectar like Eszencia. Their dry versions also include wines that mature in stainless steel or oak.

How do they make it?

The Chateau Dereszla Tokaji Vintage Brut is a traditional method sparkling wine. It is a blend of Furmint and Harslevelu, which are native Hungarian grapes.  As a traditional method sparkling wine this wine spends at least 18 months on lees to develop complexity and texture.

The wines are sold around 5 years after the vintage has been harvested. This adds some extra depth and roundness.

What does it taste like?

The bubbles are finely tuned and ever so elegant. This wine’s aromas that rise out of the glass are of flowers, pears, peach and eggshell. The flavours are matched with creaminess and wrapped up with a saline minerality. It is fuller in body, dry and it has an inviting firmness to the texture.

This really is a wine that starts conversations that then leads into contemplation.

What to drink it with?

Enjoy this fizz with seafood, chicken, vegetarian dishes or just great by itself.

Cheese

This wine matches very well with Brie and Camembert. It will also work with Comte, and a herb flavoured fresh cheese.
