While Craggy Range has set the benchmark with their Gimblett Gravel’s wines and their focus tends to be on grapes grown on New Zealand’s North Island, this Sauvignon Blanc is from the world renowned Marlborough region on the South Island. This is one of two Sauvignon Blancs in their range. Their Martinborough savvy has had a portion of the final blend, fermented and matured in barrel making it richer in style. However, this is classic Marlborough. It is all about purity of fruit and has been fermented only in stainless steel with four months on lees to add subtle creamy notes and some extra fleshiness to the fruit weight in the mouth.
There is a riverstone savouriness that compliments the zesty lemon, white peach and cream aromas. On the palate, this dry white is fuller in body with a lively crispness. Lingering fresh herbs and ginger spice add some vibrant detail in your mouth. It is this attention to detail and the evenly textured balance that makes this a wine that will appeal to all, whether you are a diehard Sauvignon Blanc drinker or not. Plus, it is a versatile food wine that will work as well with seafood, chicken or turkey as it would with canapes or soft cheese. Or, as a mid week treat as you put your feet up.
