Donnhoff 2011 Felsenberg Riesling Spatlese

donnhoff-spatl-rieslIf you love Riesling with balance and curves, then this one is a good choice for you. Helmet Donnhoff is recognized as being a producer of some of Germany’s finest rieslings and this spatlese is good to go now, or, it could easily while away in your cellar.

The Felsenberg vines are overlooked by the Felsenturmchen, a stone tower on the steep slope that appears on the label. The weathered, stony porphyry soil lends a supporting hand in ripening the grapes by providing additional warmth. This extended ripening has given this later picked style of Riesling an intensity that goes very well with food.

Right now it is pretty with floral notes to the lemon drop, pear and spice aromas. Sweetly ripe, sherberty fruit sits well with a flush of balancing acid to leave a fresh lightness in its wake. Amongst all that fruit on the finish is some savoury riverstone notes making this a wine that is a pleasure to enjoy with food, particularly lighter Asian flavours or just to sit with for a while.

Quickie review « A pretty one. Sweetly ripe, sherberty fruit balanced with refreshing acid. »
