English roses – of the vinous kind …

English roses are well worth seeking out as an alternative to other pink hued traditional method sparkling wines. These wines are those made using the same methods as Champagne. And, of course, Cava which is also a traditional method fizz.

It is not surprising, of course. Not only is the climate between England's south and Champagne similar. But also the chalk soils that extend from England through that very famous sparkling wine region. Although, it is not only these similarities. Pinot Noir is so often the focus grape used, as well. And the clones that are appear in the English vineyards are those chosen for their excellent sparkling wine making abilities.

Here are a few to start your journey into English rosé.

Ridgeview Fitzrovia Rosé Sparkling

It has a complex savouriness. The summer aromas of cherry, stonefruit, toasted bread and nuts lift are perfumed and lifted. It is fuller bodied, crisp and intense in the mouth. The spicy strawberry finish has a tartness that keeps the wines elegant. (£40)

Chapel Down Rosé Sparkling

The Chapel Down Rosé is dry to the palate with a brut level of sweetness (8 g/l residual sugar). It is the colour of pale salmon in the glass. The aromas of strawberry, cherry and nougat are fruity and sweet. It is fuller bodied, crisp and intense in the mouth.  (£32)

Digby Leander Pink Brut

The Digby Leander is a very moreish fizz. It is fresh, lightly ripe strawberry, citrus and cream. There is plenty of fruit. And it is well balanced with fine bubbles and it finishes long and lingering. (£34)
