Henschke Julius Riesling

Henschke Julius Riesling

Admittedly, outside of Australian drinkers and the world’s wine traders, Eden Valley might not appear to be one of the premier Riesling producing regions. However, it really should be better known than it is.

The Eden Valley is also the home territory of the Henschke family, who is one of Australia’s First Families of Wine. They have been making wine here since the 1860’s. The family is also one of the earlier Australian adopters of biodynamic wine making.

The Henschke Julius Riesling 2017 has intense lemon, lime zest aromas and a riverstone backbone.

The 2018 vintage still has that lime zest and citrus juice. However, here the floral notes takes on a talc nuance. A fragrant floral note softens the precision along the fuller bodied palate. It blossoms into a mineral edged, lime juice and jasmine finish.

Whichever vintage, these wines are keepers. You can enjoy the fresh vibrance now, or you can cellar it and allow it to develop some honeyed depths over a decade or two.

If you can’t wait and open now, the Julius has the intensity to cope with flavourful dishes. Particularly, something like spicy fish cakes or a chicken, chestnut, pesto puff pastry pie. However, it certainly does not need anything to make it shine as it is a very elegant and complete wine in itself.

Quickie review «The citrus and floral intensity of this Riesling provides the flesh around a mineral structure. It is one of Eden Valley’s finest. »
