Schnaitmann Simonroth Spätburgunder | Pinot Noir

Simonroth

Who makes it?

Schnaitmann Simonroth may be difficult to find outside of Germany but it is well worth picking up if and when you see it. Spätburgunder is, of course, Pinot Noir. While Germany was once synonymous with Riesling, it is perhaps less known that Germany is also within the top 5 producers of Pinot Noir in the world.  The Schnaitmann family has a long, long history of grapegrowing in the region of Fellbach.

Surprisingly, it wasn’t until 1997 that Rainer Schnaitmann produced a wine from these vines with the family name on it. With this history, it is no surprise that the family have some old vine Spätburgunder. However, the wine under the Simonroth label is made from younger Burgundy clone vines.

What does it taste like?

The morello cherry and red plum fruit is spiced up with exotic brown spices and light floral notes. Once you have taken your first sip, you realise that this is an elegant red with all the hallmarks of pinot. Its soft and silky tannins are fleshed out with a fuller body and rounded acid. There is plenty of complex nuance fruit as it unfurls in your glass. It has plenty of pinot prettiness!
