Sumarroca Il-logic Xarel-lo

Who makes it?

Sumarroca Il-logic is one of the Sumarroca family wines, one that showcases the Spanish native white grape, Xarel-lo. The vineyards supplying the grapes for the family’s wines are spread across the Penedés region. A region sitting squarely between Barcelona and Tarragona.  Xarel-lo is one of the focus grapes for the region.

Sumarroca achieved certification in 2018. They have also taken the step to choose fungal-resistant grape varieties to further reduce the need for pesticides. Some of Sumarroca’s wines are also made without additional sulphur as well. Come 2025, all wines produced in Penedès will be certified Organic. However, the Sumarroca team are going above and beyond with their many initiatives.

How do they make it?

The aim for the Il-logic is to show the quality of the well established decades old Queto Carretera vineyard. Hence it has been cool fermented fermented and aged in stainless steel tank. For some additional complexity, it has spent 3 months on its fine lees while in tank. This time on lees is very apparent in the creaminess of this wine.

What does it taste like?

This version of Xarel-lo is a salty number on the finish. That adds a distinct saline minerality to the dry white wine. There is a creaminess too, to the aroma, flavours and palate. A hint of nettles embellish the otherwise tangy grapefruit notes. It is fresh but also soft on the acid.

What to drink it with?

Grilled octopus or crumbed calamari seem a natural choice here. But you could enjoy with any seafood, including fish and chips, or even a vegetarian pasta dish. Fried gnocchi too.

Enjoy with grilled haloumi, or with fresh cheese such as feta or chevre or with white bloomy cheese such as Camembert.
