Porta 6, or Door 6, is actually trio from the Lisbon wine region of Portugal. They belong to the wine portfolio of the Vidigal family and I would say they have great shelf presence. 

In the focus range that you will most likely find on the UK wine shelves, there is a white, a red and a pink. The labels are very distinctive and are the work of a cartoonist Hauke Vaught. The wines though, are successful because they offer a taste of Portugal in each bottle. 

The range has some other wines, such as a Vinho Verde, however these three are the focus range.

Each wine focuses on native Portuguese grape varieties, such as Touriga Nacional, Castelao, Arinto, and Viosinho. The team also includes accents of international varieties. The wines are all made for food but the wines from the trio that I have tasted have no need for food to be enjoyable. I have tasted the red and the white so far. If you take these wines as they are, they are good to go.

Porta 6 White

To me, this is the pick of the two that I have tried. The wine is ripe and the selection of varieties means the wine is dry with a lower residual sugar level. In other words, the fruit is left to shine. This is not to say though that the red doesn’t deliver a glass of well balanced fruity wine. It rates high on the crowd pleaser scale.

In saying that, the white is a perfumed blend of Arinto, Viosinho, Viognier and Chardonnay. While it ferments in stainless steel, the winemaking team carefully stirs the lees for up to 3 months. This adds a creaminess that compliments the fragrant fruit.

It is a dry white wine (it sits around 2 g/l of residual sugar). The fruit is ripe and lush that with that time on lees, offers the complete package. A lively creamy and fruity white wine. 

The aromas of flowers, citrus and stonefruit finish on the palate with some zest and spiciness.

Porta 6 Red

This wine is a blend of Tinto Roriz (Tempranillo), Castelao and Touriga Nacional. It sings bright purple hues in the glass and the fruit here is sweeter and it is shapely. The aromas of fresh cherry fruit has some lighter raspberry fruit to match. It is unoaked and unashamedly fruity.
