Yalumba Y Series Viognier

Who makes it?

Yalumba Y Series Viognier is another part of Viognier story from the Hill-Smith portfolio. It is in great company with the Yalumba GEN Organic Viognier. Yalumba have proven themselves as the Australian specialists of this Condrieu grape. For over 35 years, Robert Hill-Smith and his passionate team have honed their Viognier expertise and have kept their nursery well stocked with new imported clones to trial in their Eden Valley vineyards.

This is one of those consistently good wines that will be good any vintage.

How do they make it?

The Y Series Viognier ferments with indigenous yeast and in stainless steel to retain the fragrant fruitiness. The team give this wine some time on lees to add some fleshiness to round out the texture in the mouth and add fullness.

What does it taste like?

This profile I wrote years ago, is still relevant today. It has a ripe juicy apricot personality with riper fresh orange peel notes. These are grounded with a lush and heady white flower perfume with some gingery spice. It has a silkiness and has a fuller body while still keeping a soft crispness. This is always a cleverly crafted dry, white wine and you get a whole lot of value in your glass.

What to drink with it?

A viognier like this can take Asian flavours well within its stride. I can suggest some Thai fish cakes or salt and pepper tofu or squid. Also though, a goat cheese salad.

Cheese

Like the GEN Organic Viognier, enjoy this wine with fresh cheeses, or even a herbed cheese. It would also go with a cheese flavoured with chilli.
