Who makes it?
Domaine de Montille is a long established family Burgundian wine producer with wine roots dating back to the 1700s. Even in the 1800s the family had vineyards through out both the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuit. It is a romantic wine love story. With the devastation of phylloxera, much of the estate ended up stripped. However, over the past 70 years or so, the family started their rebuilding.
Now, the family has a collection of prime Burgundian wines including wines made from Grand Cru vines on the Vougeot Clos Vougeot and Corton Clos du Roi vineyards. This wine’s position is well earned in the portfolio.
How do they make it?
‘Les Grèves’ is a high quality Premier Cru vineyard within the Côte de Beaune. The name of the vineyard refers to the gravelly soils that is intermingled with fine clay. This vineyard is both certified Organic and Biodynamic.
It is of course, 100% Pinot Noir. The Domaine will adjust their whole bunch vinification to suit the vintage up to 50%. The wines spend time in oak with a portion of around a quarter being new. The time in oak can be up to 18 months. The aim is to retain the fruit while enhancing the velvety tannins.
What does it taste like?
Don’t be in a hurry to drink this wine. Either when you open it young or if it is in your cellar. I think it needs time to hit its stride and fill its potential.
Even in youth, this is as an impressive wine as you should expect. The aroma profile of raspberry, cherry is rather pinotesque with some fresh herbs and floral notes keeping it fresh. It is fuller in body and lush with fine tannins and plump, fleshy fruit. It is bold and it is rich. The finish is detailed and there are some mushroomy savoury notes on the finish. Yet that finish is all about that ripe berry cherry fruit.
What to drink it with?
Traditional matches with Pinot noir are duck and lamb. These would be a great place to start. A rich stew is also going to be a delicious choice.
Cheese
Truffle cheese is a good choice. Even Truffle Boursin.
