Six Nero d'Avola wines! Never say no to the Nero!
Nero d'Avola is a lush red wine grape from Sicily. It takes its name from the town of Avola to the island's south east. It is not often found outside of Italy's south, but there are some great Australian versions. I remember tasting some of the pioneering plantings of the group, directly imported from Sicily in the Clare Valley over 15 years ago. There are some vineyards in the USA growing the grape too.
It is the versatility and the fruitiness that winelovers enjoy so much with this grape. And why not? It is typically a smooth and succulent red at a good price! What is not too love about that?

This is a rather elegant red. It has some purple hues in the light. There is some spicy cherry fruit with some herbs and liquorice undertones.

Crisp and dry white wines are the hallmark of the Pike family. The family is well known for their Rieslings in Australia. This Italian grape is just as well made here in Australia's Clare Valley. And the family let the fruit shine here.

This is a full bodied Italian red. It has generous cherry fruit with some nuanced earth and sage on the nose. And some background cinnamon from that portion that rested in barrel.

Donnafugata Mille e una Notte
The wine is a blend of native Sicilian Nero d’Avola, and French varieties Petit Verdot and Syrah, amongst other varieties. There is a smoky cinnamon lilt to the fresh blackberry, herb and liquorice fruit. The wine is almost opaque in its ruby hues.

A dry light red. It still sits around medium body but is very fragrant and perfumed. The aromas and flavours are in that red fruit realm. Raspberry, plums and cherries.

A blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato grapes. The aroma is a blend of plums, raspberries, earth and cinnamon. It is a fuller bodied red with lush tannins.
